Abstract

This paper discusses mapping research of the hydrographical network, formed in the regression period of the Khvalyn Sea in the area of the modern West Caspian Region, from the time, when the coastal line was at the maximum level of sea waters: at 47—48 m. In the satellite imageries and mapping data, the traces of ancient rivers' deltas and other water bodies, that existed dur¬ing the Khvalyn Sea regression period are clearly visible, that shows the complexity of the sea basin retreat process. The article describes the process of the retreat of the sea basin with the indi¬cation of standing coastlines marks and also describes in detail the formation of the hydrographic network of the region, the emergence of the water objects, the formation of deltas, and the phenomena that affected the creation of the hydrographic net¬work. In the process of the investigation, the maps of the hydro¬graphic network for West Kazakhstan of the Khvalyn period were created. For the development of these maps the topographical maps (scale 1: 100 000) and Landsat 8 satellite imagery with a spatial resolution of 15 m were used, thereby creating the most accurate retrospective maps of the study area.
