Abstract

The article deals with the results of the bioindication studies of the birch (Betula pendula Roth.) development in urbanized areas. This method researches the size of fluctuating asymmetry (FA) of birch leaves in different parts of urbosystems (residential areas, streets and roads, parks and green areas). Two large cities of the Republic of Tatarstan were chosen as the objects of research: Kazan and Nizhnekamsk. Kazan is characterized by high levels of manmade pressure, the motor transport is the largest source of negative impact on the environment there. The environmental situation of Nizhnekamsk depends on industrial ejections, oil treatment factories are the main sources of air contamination in this city. Bioindication studies have revealed the tendency of the environmental quality improvement and heterogeneity in the spatial distribution of FA index in both cities. The influence of wind direction on the distribution of FA index in the territory of the cities is extremely important.
