Abstract

Karelia is rich in recreational resources. A special place in the development of recreational activity belongs to protected areas (PA), which possess natural recreation resources and centuries-old cultural and historical heritage and are used both for domestic and international tourism. To conduct the study on the role of PA as recreational and tourist facilities, seven PA have been chosen. Karelia is characterized by clear differentiation of PAs in accordance with the predominance of natural (biological and hydrological, geomor- phological and geological) or cultural heritage resources, or the presence of both of them, that allowed us to divide PAs into three groups, which are characterized by various groups of recreational resources, as well as such important parameters for the assessment of their recreational use as their areal size, attendance and in-volvement in popular tourist destinations. PAs' resource evaluation allows us to optimize the planning of their recreational use.
