Abstract

The cyanobacteria are promising bio-sorbents of heavy metals. They quickly reproduce themselves and have high tolerance and the ability to live in extreme conditions, are able to quickly and efficiently adsorb the heavy metal cations. The article shows the possibility of using living and dry biomass of Spirulina subsalsa for the removal of heavy metals from model solutions. The article presents the data on the effect of the con-centration of heavy metals, biomass, hydrogen ion exponent (pH) on biosorptional activity of Spirulina. It is shown, that the living biomass of Spirulina subsalsa is susceptible to the negative effects of heavy metals. The dry biomass is able to absorb higher concentrations of copper, nickel, and zinc with the efficiency from 89 to 93,6 %. Thus, Spirulina subsalsa is promising biological material for water purification from heavy metal salts.
