Abstract

The article presents the results the comprehensive eco- logical and radiological studies of the soils at the site of an underground nuclear explosion, code-named “Tavda” in the lower Tavdinsky District in the south of the Tyumen Region. Within the framework of the research, the concentration of natural radio-nuclides in the profile of grey forest soil is identified, the specific effective activity of natural radio-nuclides is calculated. The data analysis showed that the studied area is characterized by a favourable natural geochemical background, in spite of the increased contents of natural radio-nuclides as compared to the background values. The content of radio-nuclides of cesium-137 and strontium-90 is determined directly at the epicenter and adjacent territory to the site of the explosion. The analysis of the layer-by- layer distribution of radioactive decay products showed that the concentration of strontium-90 is much  higher than the content of cesium-137, at some sampling points it is 1.5—2 times higher, these elements still have high residu- al values in the deeper layers of the soil profile and need constant periodic monitoring.
