Abstract

The article presents the data of biotesting the surface water of the rivers of the city of Sterlitamak in the Republic of Bashkortostan on genotoxicity. As a biological test-system the onion Allium cepa L. was used. The mitotic activity and frequency of chromosomal aberrations in the root meristem of the test object was estimated. The analysis of seasonal changes of river water quality revealed that the highest mitotic activity of cells was observed in the roots of the onion, sprouted in the samples of water from the rivers, taken during the autumn period. Water samples, taken in spring, had a depressing effect on the mitotic activity of the meristem of the onion roots compared to the control value. The maximum number of chromosomal aberrations was observed in the roots of the onion, sprouted in autumn water samples.
