Abstract

The paper analyzes Fe concentration in more than 10 500 samples of drinking water from six territories of the Jewish Autonomous Region, including the capital of the Autonomous Region, the city of Birobidzhan, during 2007—2014. The staff of the accredited laboratory “The Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology in the Jewish Autonomous Region” conducted the study applying the atomic absorption and photometric methods. It was found that the consumer of the lowlands receives the water with a high Fe concentration, exceeding the MPC for drinking water 2.4—5.3 times. The elevated levels of Fe caused not only by natural factors, but also by the secondary water pollution from iron pipes. The contaminated water increases the risk of the skin and subcutaneous tissue diseases. The methods of reducing the concentration of iron in the drinking water which are used in various countries can be applied to the JAR for providing safe water both for children and adults.
