Abstract

In the study of three regions within the steppe zone of European Russia (the Rostov, the Saratov and the Orenburg Regions), the experience in the regional natural-ecological framework formation is summarized and its prospects are examined. The review of zonal landscape standard plots, established as a natural area of preferential protection, is given, supplemented with the proposals for the expansion of their network. It is concluded that there were the opportunities to reserve the standard steppe plots, which were missed in the early 20th century and also during the period of the mass virgin and fallow lands pioneering (1954—1964). The land structure optimization with the allocation of the preserved pastures as the basis of natural-ecological framework is proposed. The degree of the development of continuous latitudinal natural areas of preferential protection network, including the patterns of zonal, typical and rare steppe regional landscapes is considered as an indicator of the landscape and environmental sustainability of the territory.
