Abstract

The article is devoted to the detailed classification of some of the most important ecosystem services in order to calculate the cost of ecosystem services and determine the guidelines of economic calculations of possible financial losses from damage to ecosystems.

It is noted that ecosystem services of natural environments are highly underestimated even by experts both because of insufficient awareness of the relationship between natural ecosystems and the functioning of human life support systems, and because of the lack of methodological basis for the quantitative numerical calculation of the value of ecosystem services. At present, the importance of many ecosystem services remains beyond the focus of society, business and management structures, leading to increasing ecosystem depletion, veiling the true value of these ecosystem benefits and services, and in practice they are often even interpreted as having no value. In this case, compensation for environmental damage falls on the whole society. Accurate records of the damage to ecosystems are necessary in order to force the polluter to pay for the damages caused to the ecosystems. This is one of the fundamental principles of the economy of nature: “the polluter pays” and the greening of the economy, i.e. the introduction of environmental factors in the analysis of economic indicators of development.

The most adequate, according to the authors, and convenient from the ecological point of view, detailed list of ecosystem services of atmo¬spheric air, natural waters, agroecosystems and wild fauna is offered.

Keywords

economic assessment, ecosystem services, region, natural resources, ecosystem damage, green economy, “the polluter pays”.
