Abstract

This paper presents the results of the radio-ecological research of the Karakol River basin in the Issyk-Kul Region. The Karakol River has a snow-glacier feed, the chemical concentration of the water is slightly mineralized and it is of hydrocarbonate-sulfate type with the predominance of calcium. The town of Karakol is located in the lower flow of the Karakol River, it is the administrative and cultural center of Issyk-Kul Oblast. The gamma-radiation background in the territory of the town of Karakol varies in the range of 16 to 31 microR/h and the radiation does not exceed the established safely standards in the republic. The concentration of radionuclide is identified in soil, water, river bottom sediments and the town of Karakol, the values of concentration vary within the natural regional background and the significant increase of the specific activity of radionuclides is observed in the estuary zone of the river. The map of the level of the exposure dose of the territory of the town of Karakol was compiled with the help of the computer program “Surfer-12”. The obtained research results can be used as reference materials for radio-ecological monitoring of urban areas.
