Abstract

The creation of the Mammoth Museum was preceded by a long period of knowledge accumulation on the extinct Pleistocene mammals of Yakutia, which can be divided into two stages: pre-scientific and scientific. The scientific stage, in turn, is comprised of five conventional periods by time intervals. Key events, paleontological findings and discoveries that led to a significant increase in knowledge about the extinct Quaternary mammals are examined in each period. The natural result of the study and accumulation of the exhibits of the extinct mammals was the creation of the Mammoth Museum in 1991. It was initiated by Yakut paleontologist P.А. Lazarev. The history of the greatest paleontological discoveries in the territory of the North-East of Asia is inscribed in golden letters in the pages of the history of the study of the Earth and is an integral part of it.
