Abstract

The paper discusses the impact of the pig farm wastewater on the peat land Dmitrovo-Cherkasskiy and the industrial waste landfill wastewater on the peat land Galician Moss in the Tver Region. It is shown that peat- lands can clean wastewater to the required standards. According to the results of field and laboratory studies it has been found that peat deposits may absorb a significant proportion of pollutants. It is recommended to calculate the allowable discharges to a peat land with consideration of ion-exchange properties of the peat. These properties show the natural ability of the peat land to cleanse itself. The proposals for the use of peatlands for wastewater discharges may be useful to create a system of ecological monitoring of the peatlands subjected to the impact of economic activities of water users.
